BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: The Sawyer County sheriff says a 93-year-old woman was murdered in a thrill killing with satanic overtones.
Sheriff James Meier says 27-year-old Christopher Lee Roalson and a 15-year-old Radisson boy stabbed 93-year-old Irena Roszak 15 times early Sunday morning.
Roszak was found in her bed and one of the stab wounds penetrated her heart. Meier says that stab wound is likely the cause of death. Meier says detectives have both knives used in the murder.
Meier says Roalson and the teen set out to commit a murder. He says the pair initially targeted another couple in Radisson but when they got to that house, a motion light came on and the two were scared away.
They then went to Roszak’s house and broke in before stabbing her to death in her bed. The sheriff says as the suspects walked past Roszak's home, one of them said he knew an old woman lived there and that they shouuld go in and 'kill her.' Meier says Roszak was alone at the time. Two days later, someone checking on her found her body and called investigators on Tuesday morning around 9 a.m.
Meier says Roalson described himself as a ‘son of Satan'. He also says after the murder, Roalson went back to his own home and turned a crucifix upside-down. Meier says Roalson did that to signify that 'Satan is now the king.'
Sheriff Meier says says Roalson and the 15-year-old boy were acquaintances, but he doesn't know if the two knew Roszak.
Deputies arrested Roalson and the teen on Thursday. Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle says a break in the case happened after someone heard Roalson talking about participating in the murder.
Meier says there was a probable cause hearing in Sawyer Co. court Friday. A judge set bond at $1 million for each suspect. Both are in jail awaiting formal charges.
Roszak lived at her home on Ogden Avenue for 12 years. Radisson is about 10 miles north of Ladysmith. The village has a population of about 200 people.
Court records show Roalson was convicted in 2005 for possession of marijuana and retail theft. In 2007, he was charged with one count of theft and 5 counts of issuing worthless checks. Records show arrest warrants were issued for all the 2007 charges.
