U.S. Senator Herb Kohl and Wisconsin Secretary of Agriculture Rod Nilsestuen will meet in Eau Claire Wednesday to talk about the Federal Meat Inspection Program.
>
Kohl is the sponsor of Bi-Partisan Legislation to overturn a nearly 30-year ban on the interstate shipment of state inspected meat and poultry products.
>
Lifting the ban would allow producers and processors who use state inspected plants to sell their products outside Wisconsin. Which is home to more state-inspected meat plants than any other state in the nation.
>
Earlier this year Kohl urged the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to abandon plans for a drastic cut in funding for state meat inspection programs, which threatened nearly $240-thousand dollars for Wisconsin’s program this year.
>
Kohl and Nilsestuen will speak at 2:30 this afternoon at Maloney’s Baloney on east Hamilton Plaza.
