People living near lakes in several northern Wisconsin counties could see lots of dead fish over the next few weeks.

The Department of Natural Resources anticipates an outbreak of the Columnaris bacteria. Biologists say it could affect fish in lakes in Polk, Barron, Washburn, and Burnett counties. The bacteria attacks fish while they are stressed from seasonal spawning. The DNR says the disease could hit populations of bluegill, crappies, yellow perch and bullheads, but there's no risk to people.
