UW-Eau Claire is helping high school students with disabilities get a feel for college life. It’s part of a new program at the university called Camp Campus.
Nine high school students with Asperger's Syndrome are spending the week on campus to get the full college experience. The students get to live in a dorm, eat at the dining hall, meet other students, and learn all about the services the school offers. The program is designed to help high school juniors or seniors who have Asperger's and want to go to college.
"I think the kids are enjoying themselves and they're getting that bond with each other,” says program mentor and UW-Eau Claire graduate Amy Hilbert. “Some friendships are growing which is very awesome for us to see. And that's one of our goals, for them to leave with a phone number, an address, or e-mail so they can keep in contact and have friends with common bonds."
Organizers say it's the first of what they hope is an annual program.
