A man had to be rescued Tuesday night after police say he got stranded on an island in the Chippewa River.
The Eau Claire Police Department says 20-year-old Jeremiah Caturia was rescued around 10:30. The Eau Claire Fire Department says Caturia waded out to the island near Short Street earlier in the afternoon. He was camping and fell asleep. Caturia woke up when it started to rain and noticed the water level went up a lot. Battalion Chief Kim Nessel says he's unsure if the water rose because of the rain, or if Xcel had opened the dams.
Nessel says the island is a frequent area for kids to go swimming. He says it can also be a dangerous area.
