The UW system is now requiring criminal background checks for all of its new employees.
>
UW campuses have until May first to come up with a policy to meet this new standard.
>
It is state law that someone cannot be turned away from a job due to a criminal record.
>
However, the background checks will provide for greater security on campus.
>
"If we determine that there is a substantial relationship between what the individual was convicted of and the duties that they are applying, then we will not hire them at this university,” says UW-Eau Claire Interim Provost Steven Tallant.
>
Previously, UW-Eau Claire did perform background checks for jobs dealing with children, money, and security.
>
Tallant says the added step in the process should not create any delays for the applicants.
