A tugboat tried to tow another tug in the southeastern end of the lake the evening of December third.

The crew with the Zenith Tugboat Company out of Duluth, Minnesota, was towing the Firm's Vintage Tug, the Seneca, when the relatively mild weather suddenly changed.

At the height of the storm, the nearly new, three-inch-thick tow rope broke and the Seneca was swept away.

The Coast Guard located it later, grounded off upper Michigan’s "Shipwreck Coast" 18 miles east of Grand Marais, Michigan.
