Christmas is just over a week away and many of you are probably wondering where the snow is, and if we’ll have a white holiday.

"When I was a kid here almost 60 years ago, it used to get 40 below quite commonly and we would have a lot of snow. We could sometimes have 2 to 3 feet of snow on the ground,” UW-Stout Biology Professor Ken Parejko said.

Living in Wisconsin, we usually expect to see a white Christmas. So, why all the brown so close to the holiday? A meteorologist from the National Weather Service in La Crosse says El Nino might be to blame.

"It's very clear that there's a moderate El Nino going on right now across the Pacific, and that does have a significant impact on the weather patterns that reach us,” Glenn Lussky said.

Then there’s the global warming theory. But professor Parejko says it’s too early to tell if that’s playing a part in our weather.

"Global warming is happening, but whether that's what's causing our not white Christmas is hard to say,” Parejko said.

Meteorologists say we’ve got a shot at getting some snow next week, but with the warm temperatures, it could just melt away.

"Right now, the way that the pattern has been setting up, it looks like there's a chance that we may not have a white Christmas through our area,” Lussky said.

So, while western Wisconsin may not be a blanket of white this Christmas, we can be sure other holiday traditions will still be glowing bright.
