Bear sends pregnant woman to the hospital
She says it also walked through her home while she and her 2-year-old son were napping. DNR has three traps set around her house. Posted: 9:49 AM Jul 1, 2009Reporter: Mary Rinzel Email Address: mary.rinzel@weau.com |

The DNR used to operate on the "3 Strikes" mentality. After relocating a bear 3 times, it is put down. We hunt about 110 miles north of here, and have shot many bears with relocation tags in their ears, several with 2 or 3 tags. They get used to eating garbage and keep coming back. Did you actually say this bear "wasn't hurting anyone?" That woman got LUCKY!!! That bear could easily have snapped her neck with that blow to the head. I'm against killing animals for no reason, but this one needs to be put down. About the only place left you can relocate him to not interact with humans is Alaska. I DO agree that the DNR should further increase the number of harvest tags over what they did this year. They re-calculated the population estimate to be about double what they thought. That might still be low.
Maybe rather than relocating the bear they should relocate the pregnant woman. :-)
Typical city person answer, trap it and send it some where "safe", or in other words, make it some one else's problem. I live north of Cornell and we have at least 12 different bears in a 2 mile area. A friend that lives south of Cornell said they have 13 different ones on camera. It's time the DNR stops wasting money and open up bear season. Presently, it still takes years to get a bear tag. They still insist there's not that many bears in the area. This nuisance bear should be shot. Bears that do not fear humans (going into houses) need to be put down. Anyone who has come into contact with a bear in the wild knows what a bear should act like when confronted by a human..run. It's not the bear's fault, but it will eventually hurt someone. Just like in Yellowstone Park studies have shown, once a bear loses it's fear of humans and learns to eat around humans (garbage cans, break-ins), it will eventually have to be put down. I pray the DNR wises up before someone is really hurt or worse.
From what i recall bears dont just stay in one spot. That is the reason for them killing the bear or they could move it by one of you guys and then it can be your problem
when a bear is a problem here, trapping and relocating it only makes it a problem there - these animal have a large range and sometimes return several hundread miles to a location. Imagine how much tax money is spent sending these bears on vacation after vacation
I don't understand why they would shoot the bear. It isn't rogue and it isn't hurting people. It was afraid of her which is why it acted in the way that it did, but it showed no interest in killing her. She even agrees! They should not shoot the bear, but rather, move him to a better location so that he can be happy and not have any more run-ins with humans. Poor bear...
I DO NOT THINK THAT THE BEAR SHOULD BE SHOT JUST BECAUSE IT WAS AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME. TRAP IT, AND SEND IT FAR AWAY, NOT KILL A ANIMAL THAT DON'T KNOW ANY BETTER!
i agree that bears should be trapped and moved to a safer location, for them and for us. dnr do not always have the correct answers, just ask hunters and country people
The bear shouldn't be put down just because it was curious. They should trap it and move it away from there.
Yep good for her she understands nature and is safe.Too many people live in what is thier territory>BUT the so called DNR has all the Answers.,
