500 Club for Kids tries to promote healthy food options

ONALASKA, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area health system is taking action to help fight childhood obesity.

Gundersen Health System has expanded its 500 Club by starting its 500 Club for Kids to encourage healthy eating.

500 Club was started 30 years ago, and 500 Club for Kids started in May.

Gundersen Health System said the club got its name because meals should be around 500 calories or less.

This month 500 Club and 500 Club for Kids have teamed up with McDonald's to bring Go-Gurt as a side option for happy meals.

Go-Gurt is available at all McDonald's nationwide.

“500 Club for Kids is important, because we want to teach children how to eat healthy right from the get go. Right when they're little we want it to be appealing to them and be appealing to parents knowing that it is a healthy option,” said Gundersen Health System registered dietitian and 500 Club specialist Valerie Pampuch.

The club has more than 600 member locations, and is on menus nationwide.
