Some county board members are considering moving the county seat out of Eau Claire because of jail project.

So, I happen to notice that WEAU allows comments on stories where local bigots can attack Muslims and Hispanics up until the point where someone submits comments attacking said bigots. Where have the stories and comments regarding the Spanish training for officers and offensive fireworks gone? Apparently, WEAU only allows aggressive commentary if it attacks minority groups. Let me guess, the person running these blogs is a white guy who dislikes minorities...
You know what the strangest thing about this whole situation is? To the EC people who have "we don't want the jail down town" mentallity...THE JAIL'S BEEN DOWN TOWN FOR THE LAST 75 YEARS!!!!!
The county board, city board, Sheriff...this is embarrassing! I am not from Eau Claire (just going to college at Stout), and I feel for the citizens of this town. At the same time, your town voted for these clowns. If you want change, go to the monthly meetings. Unfortunately, 99% of the people who are so fed up with these officials or just the jail situation in general will never exercise that right. I hope your town stands up to this mess!
Would we be seeing all this controversy and drama if the County were building a 'hospital'? Or, is it just the 'icky' factor of building a 'jail'? It seems like a highly vocal minority of badly misinformed people (like some of those commenting below) want to raise our taxes by forcing the County to build in different location at twice the cost just because it's an 'icky' jail. That's just nuts.
Sharon, your proposal of moving folks from the county jail to the state prison system after 30 days is a violation of state law. You would have people with driving violations in Columbia...
I don't know why the county wants to put the jail in down town Eau Claire in the first place. I drive into Eau Claire everyday on my way to work, and can't help but notice the big open, unused field just East of Altoona out by County Road SS.
I hear some schools will be vacant- use them for huber jails ! Wait, then the cops won't have a palace like they dream about -
It is just another bad thought out idea, especially in light of the current economy. You force people out of their homes to build the jail and then find out the county can't build there. Those family's should be reimbursed a lot more than just the sale price of their house. Sounds like a place for a lawsuit because you forcibly moved people out of their homes and then didn't follow through on your eminent domain plans! An Idea...What about where the State Patrol headquarters is located. I don't know how much land is there, but Gander Mountain was able to find enough land out there.
time for a recall election- these people forgot who they work for !
There are many places across the country that don't have their primary jail adjacent to their courthouse. For example - Washington, DC's primary jail was for many years located in Lorton, VA, about 25 miles south. And Washington, DC had MUCH more crime than Eau Claire county has ever had during the time the prison was active. This county has so much open space - if a new jail really is necessary, why can't a space that isn't in the middle of it's major population area be used? For public safety, that seems to make the most sense.
Thanks James for stating that the County Board is acting like a bunch of 2 year old kids and whining. It doesn't end with them either. I've heard Sheriff Kramer is stomping his feet as well. These "whiners" want to get into the jail business and build a big jail to house others as well. Looks like hell bent on doing it regardless of public opinion against it. It sure sounded like a threat from Stella Pagonis in the news video, didn't it. These are elected officials but don't seem to act like it...it sure looks like they are trying every trick in the book including threats... I have a solution...instead of "protest" petition...how about a "recall" petition and throw these jokers out starting with Pagonis and few others...while we're at it...let's recall Kramer as well. It's time is done to stop the recklessness of these individuals. I've even personally witnessed Kramer's inappropriate behavior towards people against the jail project... Let's recall the cancer in our government!!
LET THE JAIL DIE !!
Just like a bunch of 2 year olds. They don't get what they want, so they stomp their feet, whine, and cry about it, then threaten to move the county seat too?? Grow up, act like the respectable elected officals you're supposed to be and come up with a responsible plan for what you want to do so people might listen (and agree) with you. Oh yea, and I wouldn't go on a shopping spree (buying land and buildings) until you have ALL of your ducks in a row and know for sure you can build what you want, where you want! Just a thought.
A first step should be to tell the city to relocate their police department headquarters and jail cells. Some of that space could provide short term relief while the county builds the new county government center complex in Altoona.
I hope they do move. This is just what the city council deserves as a legacy. So much for shared services, wait and watch your taxes go up now.
