A state Web site that shames delinquent taxpayers is proving to be lucrative for tax coffers.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, the Delinquent Tax Internet Posting has collected more than $72 million since its launch in 2006.
Department spokeswoman Jessica Iverson says so far, the number posted to the site has been constant this year, even though it's the worst economic climate in decades.
But she says the process of posting a delinquent account takes months, so the effects of the recession could still be coming.
For the fiscal year that ended June 30, the site collected nearly $20.3 million.
Since January 2008, the site posts names of those who owe at least $5,000 in state taxes. Earlier, the list had posted those owing at least $25,000.
