Memorial Service In Stevens Point For La Crosse Homicide Victim

It was a time for mourning the loss of a Wisconsin college student ... and for charging the man accused of killing her.

The memorial service was held at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where 23-year-old Danielle Gorectke from Minocqua was a student. At about the same time, an Onalaska man appeared in La Crosse County Circuit Court on a murder charge in her death.

Twenty-four-year-old Irvin Ramirez faces a charge of first-degree intentional homicide. La Crosse County Circuit Judge Dale Pasell set bond at one million dollars cash.

Gorectke's body was found Sunday morning by a worker plowing the parking lot at Christ Covenant Church in La Crosse, where she had been visiting her sister before the two became separated after going into a downtown bar.

Medical Examiner John Steers says Gorectke died of blunt force trauma and no weapons were used in the attack.

According to the criminal complaint, Ramirez was arrested in La Crescent, Minnesota, after getting into an argument with a convenience store clerk. That's when a police officer noticed he had blood on his face, coat and hands.
