Altoona Middle School found its best speller today.

Twelve students from grades five through eight competed in the Altoona Middle School Spelling Bee.

The contestants battled their way through words such as "catamaran" and "tyranny".

Sixth grader Phoebe Flesch came out on top by spelling m-a-y-h-e-m, "mayhem."

The champion was nervous but prepared for the contest.

"I prepared a little bit before the 6th grade one, my mom just read me some words out of the dictionary and I spelled them for her, but that's pretty much all,” says Flesch.

Phoebe says now that she's won, her mom is letting her get her hair dyed.

She doesn't know what color yet though.

She will now compete in the next level competition in Cadott on February 22nd.
