Cold Weather Car Emergency Tips

Auto technicians say the cold weather can really wreck havoc on your car so you need to be prepared for the worst. They say you should always have a warm blanket handy and an emergency survival kit with flares.

They also say if your car becomes disabled don't try to keep driving, you need to pull off immediately.

"Stay to the right and get as far off the interstate as you possibly can and if your car comes with an emergency kit, put the reflectors on and never stand outside the car or behind the car," Auto Technician Tom Felix said.

He says with traffic flying by, the best thing to do is stay inside and call for help. But, if you have your engine running for a long period of time, you need to keep your windows cracked half an inch to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

But, technicians say all this can be avoided with regular maintenance checks.

Another helpful tip is to keep your gas tank full, technicians say when your gas levels get low your fuel system can freeze.

And they also say if you see a stranded driver you can help them most by calling 911 or the police department to assist.
