UPDATE: 10:50PM
Students from all over Western Wisconsin were out cheering on their teams Friday night, but nearly 200 kids were home sick Friday in one district.
180 students and staff were out sick Friday in the Osseo-Fairchild district and that night it was the talk at the Chieftains football game.
Parents said they saw fewer students in the stands but most are happy it was Friday so the students who are sick have a few days to rest.
Football fans say the student section was a bit bare on Friday. It's because parents say Friday was a scary day for the Osseo-Fairchild School District.
"You're talking about 200 kids who got rapidly ill so the quicker we find out the better off everyone will be,” says one parent Chris Hestekin.
And while one mom was here cheering on her team her son was at home trying to get better.
"He started throwing up about quarter after 12 [Friday] night till about 7 [Friday] morning," says another parent Lisa Boettcher.
Lisa Boettcher says he started feeling better Friday afternoon but she says there was no way he was going to school.
"When you're a mom of four you know kids get sick and you just deal with it," says Boettcher.
The Trempealeau County Health Department says with the speed the illness spread, and the symptoms, it looks like it's tied to something the students ate. Health Officer Christine Berth says since students are complaining about nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, she doesn't think it's influenza, but the county isn't ruling anything out as it tries to find the cause. However, she says even if it’s food-related, it's possible people could spread it to each other. So as the fans finished out the game, the parents say they can only wait for it to pass.
"Well I hope it only lasts 8 hours for everybody and I hope my other three don't get it,” says Boettcher.
“I think anytime a lot of people get sick there is cause for concern but I don't think there's any reason to panic or pull your kid out of school,” says a mom of 3, Sussie Popple.
The School District says it’s using the weekend to clean classrooms. The district says its working with the health department on this. It sent home a note with elementary school students explaining what the symptoms were.
ORIGINAL STORY FROM FRIDAY:
An area school district says dozens of students and a few teachers are out of school with flu-like symptoms.
Osseo-Fairchild High School and Middle School Principal, Steve Glocke, says almost 120 students are home sick from the elementary school and another 60 are out from the middle and high school.
Glocke says he's not sure what caused the symptoms but he hasn't heard any reports of fever among the sick students and teachers. He says he also hasn't heard of any confirmed swine flu cases in the district.
Glocke says school is going on as scheduled. He says custodians will take more time cleaning and disinfecting the schools this weekend.
