Eau Claire building designated as local landmark

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Tearing down a historic building is the focus of an ongoing debate amidst the confluence project's plans to change the downtown scene.

In a five-to-three vote, the Eau Claire Landmarks Commission voted Thursday evening to designate 6 South Barstow as a local landmark.

Dozens of people showed up at Thursday night's meeting voicing opinions to keep the historic buildings on South Barstow.

The owner can appeal, then the city council would make the final decision.

Developers say the efforts likely won't make a difference because the building's owner doesn't support the designation.
