Passenger Takes the Wheel During DUI Stop

By  |

When the weather gets bad crashes pile up as was the case on Highway 93 around 11:30 Wednesday night.

"One of them was over the center line. The impact was pretty much head on," explained Eau Claire County Sheriff's Deputy Rod Sterns.

The crash left a woman stuck in her car and shut the highway down to one lane.

But while crews worked on freeing the woman a deputy directing traffic was nearly hit by a truck.

"He stopped to talk to the driver, smelled the odor of intoxicants and decided to do a field test of the driver of the vehicle. While he was out with the driver doing a field test the passenger, highly upset over the incident, jumped in the drivers seat and took off," said Sterns.

Stearns took off after her but didn't have to go far before the chase was over.

"She pulled into a driveway that wasn't plowed and hit a post and got stuck," Sterns said.

Turns out she too had been drinking.

The woman was lead away in handcuffs. She and the truck's first driver spent the night in jail awaiting DUI charges.
