Same Sex Marriages

The public has its say today at the state capitol about a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage in Wisconsin.

The bill would change every reference of ``husband'' and``wife'' in current state law to ``spouse.''

The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled this month that full marriage rights for gay couples is constitutional in that state.

The ruling has no effect on Wisconsin law. But Republicans here
have said they would push an amendment to the state constitution
that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

A constitutional amendment must pass both houses in two
consecutive legislative sessions and be approved by voters in a statewide referendum before it can be enacted.

The bill's sponsors are Representative Mark Pocan and Senator
Fred Risser, both of Madison.
