Obesity Lawsuit

Lawmakers want to give restaurants and food manufacturers immunity from Wisconsin residents who think they caused their obesity.

The Senate approved the bill Wednesday. The Assembly has already approved the legislation, which next goes to the governor.

A spokesman for Gov. Doyle says he has concerns about the bill because it's pointless.

No one has filed such a lawsuit in Wisconsin. But he stopped short of saying the governor would veto the bill.

The legislation comes amid a national debate over obesity and Americans' eating habits.

The legislation grants liability from obesity lawsuits for food manufacturers, marketers, packers, advertisers, distributors or sellers.

Only Louisiana had a law in effect banning such lawsuits at the beginning of the month. At least 19 states are considering similar bills.
