New CWD Report and Local Counties Are on the List

The regional director of the DNR office for West Central Wisconsin says it's the first he has heard of it, a new list about chronic wasting disease that includes Eau Claire and Chippewa counties.

The list was compiled using a new test for the brain disease that kills deer, but the state only recognizes one test for its official list. That list only includes eight counties. The DNR says the other testing method is only designed to screen for the disease, not officially diagnose it.

An Associated Press review found that test determined that there were deer that screened positive for CWD in 14 additional counties, including Eau Claire, Chippewa, Taylor, Vernon and Portage.

Scott Humrickhouse, the top DNR official says he'll be looking into the report Thursday.
