Wisconsin Soldier Killed in Iraq

IRAQ - March 11, 2004 - An Army Reservist from Ellsworth died Wednesday when an improvised explosive device hit his convoy in Iraq.

Specialist Bert Hoyer was assigned to the 625th Engineer Company based in Ellsworth, he was 23.

A military officer came to the family home Wednesday afternoon to inform them of the death.

Bert Hoyer was a 1999 graduate of Ellsworth High School. He had decided to enlist in the Reserves when he enrolled at Vermillion Community College in Ely, Minnesota.

Hoyer is the eleventh person from Wisconsin to die serving in Iraq.
