Bail was set at half a million dollars cash for a 14-year-old Burnett County teencharged in the shooting death of his mother last year.
Teddy Staples appeared in Burnett County court and was charged with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of 45-year-old Bonnie Hills of rural Danbury last November. The criminal complaint says Staples admitted to killing his mother after she caught him smoking marijuana and got angry.
Staples' attorney, Keith Peterson says he has some concerns about whether Staples understands the charge against him and the possible consequences.
Burnett County District Attorney Ken Kutz says he has to look at the seriousness of the crime, along with keeping the public and the teen's best interests in mind.
Staples is currently being held at the juvenile detention center in Eau Claire. A preliminary hearing is set for March.
