Landmark Mississippi River Bluff Crumbles
Winona's landmark bluff known as Sugar Loaf is showing signs of aging. Part of the rocky pinnacle overlooking the Mississippi River crumbled Monday sending tons of limestone off the northwest face of the landmark towering above this southeastern Minnesota city.
Authorities said rolling boulders and smaller pieces stopped within about 100 yards of the nearest house. Winona's superintendent of parks said freezing and thawing of water inside Sugar Loaf likely caused the crumbling action.
It's the first time in decades that the tower has lost some of its limestone. Officials note that the pinnacle is not a natural land force, but was instead created by limestone quarrying 100 years ago.
