A 21-year-old Juneau County man dies in a traffic crash on a Spring Break trip.

A coroner from Dooly County, Georgia says Jason Buchmeier of Mauston was one of the six men in a minivan headed to Florida.

Five of the six young people are students at UW-Eau Claire.

Rooney Bowen says the van was headed south on Interstate 75 when a tractor-trailer heading in the opposite direction lost its rear tandem tires.

He says the tires went airborn across the median and crashed through the top of the van.

"When the tire hit the top of the windshield and the top of the van, it just peeled it back just like you use a can opener," Bowen says. "I've been doing this for 25 years and that's the most freaky accident I've ever seen. It's just a very tragic accident. These kids were doing nothing wrong and they were just at the wrong place at the wrong time."

Bowen says the driver of the van, Jason Schluter of Mauston, was able to pull off to the side of the road, but has serious injuries to his spine and was put on a respirator.

Buchmeier was pronounced dead at the scene.
