Ellsworth Funeral

Specialist Bert E. Hoyer died on March 10 in Ba Quba, Iraq when a roadside bomb hit his convoy.

The 23-year-old was a member of the 652nd Engineering Company, based in Ellsworth. It was that community that closed Main Street to give the 1999 Ellsworth High School graduate a final farewell.

Hoyer's parents say the unit is like a family, and their son was proud to serve his country. Larry Hoyer, Bert's father, says he can't wait until the remainder of the company returns home at the end of the month.

Bert received the Army's Commendation Medal, the Meritory Service Award, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
