A Marine who had been in Iraq less than a month has become the 14th Wisconsin soldier killed there.

Family members say they were informed that 23-year-old Corporal Jesse Thiry from Casco in northeastern Wisconsin was killed Tuesday in fighting in Fallujah. They say he had volunteered for duty in Iraq, leaving behind the safety of a stateside training assignment in Quantico, Virginia.

His stepmother Sue Thiry says he wanted to serve and protect the country, so he asked for a transfer. An American flag and U.S. Marine Corps flag hung on the railings of the home's front deck last night.

Thiry is one of eight children, and most of the day was spent notifying family members and his fiancée, Jamie Johnson.
