Gov. Doyle signed two bills Wednesday he said would help fight cancer.

The first bill establishes a cancer drug repository, which allows lifesaving medicine to be donated to those least able to afford it. The poor, uninsured or under insured will be able to obtain unused medicine in its original, unopened containers. Drugs can be donated to the repository when cancer patients die or if their prescription changes.

The second bill creates an income tax check-off for breast cancer research. Taxpayers can designate any amount on their returns next year, which will either reduce their refund or increase their tax. The funds for research will be split equally between the University of Wisconsin Medical School and the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The check-off is expected to raise $590,000 for breast cancer research the first year.
