Two men robbed a bank at gunpoint Thursday afternoon, running off with an unknown amount of money. One of the suspects is a white man about 5'6 with a slender build. The other was about the same height with a darker complexion. Eau Claire Deputy Police Chief Eric Larsen says both men were wearing dark colored zip up hooded sweatshirts, dark baseball caps and one was wearing some type of cloth over his mouth. He says they also used a silver handgun.
"I don't have specifics on where the gun was pointed. I know they threatened with the weapon, it was clearly a threat,” says Larsen. He says after they robbed the bank they fled on foot behind the bank but after that he says police don't know where they went.
This is the fifth bank robbery in our area this month. The police say they don't know if this is connected to any of the other robberies in the area, but people at one business across the street said it's going to take a second look at its security.
"I saw the bank right across the street with an officer standing there with a rifle, pretty much knew then something was going down," says Rick Fitzl.
Rick Fitzl is the manager at the Auto Value Parts Store across the street from the Citizens Community Federal Bank. He said officers were in his parking lot and were even looking to see if his cameras caught the suspects escape.
"The officers came in asked if we witnessed anybody that fit their description. We hadn't but surely makes you aware," says Fitzl.
He says he's going to be talking with all of his employees about what they need to do.
"We don't have a hand book that says this is what you should do but we're certainly going to have to address this," says Fitzl.
People filling up next to the bank say anyone robbing banks needs to take a second thought.
"Well I think they need to look at the choices they make and make better choices to help themselves but not hurt other people," says Teresa Demoe.
"I don't think they're very bright that’s for sure you can't get very far, you're going to get caught," says Chuck Davis.
The police say if you have any information on the robbery to call them at 715-839-4972.
This is the second robbery in Eau Claire and fifth in the area in the last month. On October 8th, Alliance Bank in Eau Claire was robbed. Then a few days later, Security Bank in Ridgeland was hit on October 14th. On the 21st, River Bank in Vernon County was robbed and two days later, a person held up Bremer Bank in Elk Mound. So far no one has been arrested in any of the robberies.
