Raw Milk Prices on the Rise

Wisconsin dairy farmers can expect record raw milk prices in the coming weeks.

The change is so dramatic that one dairy expert puts the anticipated prices at “stratospheric levels” for the industry. Ed Jesse is a University of Wisconsin dairy economist. He says what's worrisome is the possibility of a very severe crash.

The so-called base price for about 100 pounds of raw milk to produce cheese was $14.40 in March and should reach nearly $19 by April. That would break the previous record price of $17 set in December 1998. Chris Galen, a spokesman for the National Milk Producers Federation, says dairy farmers nationwide are reaping the higher prices.

Galen says it's basic supply and demand. Drinking milk could cost several more cents a gallon.
