String of bank robberies "worst since 80's" says former FBI agent
A retired FBI agent says even though people have hit desperate times, this fatal bank robbery should serve as a dangerous warning to anyone thinking of taking drastic measures. Posted: 6:49 PM Oct 31, 2009Reporter: Kelly Schlicht Email Address: kelly.schlicht@weau.com |

Friday's fatal shooting of a bank robbery suspect by the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department draws a deadly close to a month with six bank robberies.
"It is very serious when you have gun play. It was very obvious this person did not want to be taken into custody and would do anything to get out," says Rusk County Sheriff David Kaminski.
The sheriff says the suspect, who was on the run from the bank robbery in the town of Exeland in Sawyer County, shot at deputies first.
“We are trained to stop the threat when fired upon. We are trained to stop the threat, and it's a tragedy when someone has to lose their life,” says Kaminski.
Crime analysts say the violent end to the bank robbery in Sawyer County yesterday may stop the string of robberies that have been happening around the area, including the Citizens Community Bank in Eau Claire.
“It’s a bad combination,” says Retired FBI Agent Jerry Southworth, referencing the armed robberies. “This triggers a response by law enforcement that certainly can lead to the real bad things that happened yesterday.”
Southworth says the suspects still at large probably won't get away with this for long, and those in custody could face hefty charges.
“Out here law enforcement and the FBI get about 100 percent of them, and end up putting people in prison for a long period of time,” says Southworth.
He says he hasn’t seen a streak of bank robberies this long since the recession of the early 1980’s.
Though the investigations continue into all six of the robberies, Southworth has a hunch they're not isolated incidents.
"I’m guessing there's a connection between some of these pervious bank robberies,” he says. “It's a little hard to believe six different individuals went out and robbed six different banks and they're all copy cats of the first one."
Southworth says with one of the latest bank robbery suspects now in custody, the other robberies in town may be closer to being solved.
“I’m guessing it will probably clear up a few of these."
