The operation, which is spear-headed by local energy and waste companies, will generate power to approximately twenty-six hundred homes twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Project officials say the Seven Mile Creek Landfill, which is east of Eau Claire, runs routinely and efficiently.

The methane gas collected off the landfill is put into diesel engines that turn the generator. The output is then put into the substation that feeds the local transmission grid. Finally, the energy ends up on the electricity wires.

Eau Claire Energy Cooperative officials say the operation will benefit local air quality and will now be harnessed as a "green" energy source.
