Voters in the Eau Claire Area School District did not approve a $21 million referendum on Tuesday's ballot. Now, one district leader says the board is faced with some tough decisions.

The district faces a projected $7.5 million shortfall next year.
The school board already approved $2 million in cuts this year. They include increasing the student-teacher ratio at middle schools.

District leaders say now that the referendum failed, everything is subject to cuts and they're not ruling out closing schools or crafting other referendums.

"Virtually everything in the budget is subject to reduction in all areas. That means class size and reducing staff in all areas. Virtually everything is going to be under consideration," says Dan Van De Water.

Van De Water says he expects a lot of school board meetings and public hearings in the near future to figure out just what to cut.
