When it comes to solving major crimes, investigators say you can play a huge role with just a single tip. The crimes include the recent string of bank robberies; two in Eau Claire.
Officers are still looking for three suspects caught on security tape, but the Eau Claire Police Department is making it really easy for everyone to take a second look at them and some of the other "most wanted" people in the city.
One man robbed Alliance Bank. Two men held up Citizens Community Bank. Other people are wanted in connection to thefts at Best Buy and at Blockbuster; still others for credit card fraud and identity theft. All of their pictures are among the 24 posted on the Eau Claire Police Department's Open Cases website.
"Just because you commit a crime and you got away with it for a little while doesn't mean you're completely free," says Officer Jason Kaveney.
Kaveney says the same thing goes for the 25 pages of people in Eau Claire County with warrants; 17 of whom show up on the city's “Most Wanted” list.
"People forget we have people like this in our community with warrants—dangerous people," Kaveney says.
Anthony Carey is charged with burglary and theft; Arelene Erickson with attempt to manufacture and deliver cocaine and Donnie Whitley with battery. Kaveney says James Earl Moore is perhaps the most dangerous; he's charged with first degree sexual assault and false imprisonment.
While some of the mug shots will be swapped out for other criminals, Moore's will stay until he is back in cuffs; something the deputy chief says a tip could accomplish.
"Don't assume someone else is going do it. Everyone needs to participate and it's really the community that keeps us safe,” says Deputy Chief Eric Larsen with the Eau Claire Police Department.
In two years, tips helped identify eight suspects from the Open Cases website. As for the Most Wanted website, it's a little harder to tell because as soon as they find someone with a warrant, Officer Kaveney pulls the picture and puts up someone new. He also routinely swaps out the people wanted for less serious crimes.
