Tuesday, voters will decide a school merger question that would close one small town school if passed.
In August about 10% of the Weyerhauser population petitioned a school merger between the Chetek and Weyerhaeuser School Districts. Chetek Superintendent Al Brown says the possible consolidation has been an emotional issue for some in Weyerhaeuser, but he says since both districts are suffering from declining enrollment, the consolidation would boost the education for students in both towns.
Tuesday, a separate referendum will be held in each school district. It has to pass in both districts to become effective. If that happens, Weyerhaeuser School would close. The vote will take place Tuesday from 7AM until 8PM. If the referendums pass, changes will take effect July 1st of next year.
