Forty-two-year old Dennis Berry is a former Eau Claire city council member.
In court today, he pleaded no contest to one count and, in exchange, 11 other counts against him were dropped.
Berry was immediately found guilty.
District Attorney Rich White stated, "If Mr. Berry had gone to trial and were convicted, I very likely may have been asking for prison but in return for his agreement to pay restitution for the full amount from that case, I agreed to ask for simply the additional probation and nine months of jail."
Prosecutors say Berry arranged to be issued checks by a secretary for Indianhead Construction, even though he never worked there.
He was also accused of later applying for and receiving unemployment compensation for losing the fictitious job.
All told, he reportedly received around $50,000 in illegal compensation.
Berry will be sentenced on May 14.
