The DNR has been working for several years to restore rivers, creeks and streams; and every two years they go back to the location of a project and check its condition.

On Tuesday the DNR was at Elk Creek west of Eau Claire, along with students from Menomonie High School, checking up on a project from 2002.

The project involved narrowing Elk Creek, concentrating the flow of water, and bringing back the natural habitat of trout.

After two years the DNR says the Creek is still healthy and that it’s become a good fishing spot for people.

Governor Doyle also stopped by the creek Tuesday and announced he will sign legislation on Thursday, also Earth Day, protecting groundwater, which will aide in the clean up of streams, rivers, and creeks.
