Altoona Woman Waiting for Son

An Altoona woman who's dying of cancer is waiting to hear when, or if, the Army will send her son home from Iraq.

Patrice Confer sent a message through the Red Cross to the Army asking them to allow her son to return home. She hasn't heard from Army officials yet.

The Army allows soldiers in Wagner's position to return home. But, it must consider several factors, such as the soldier's mission and the parent's condition, when granting the leave.

Doctors told Patrice Confer about two weeks ago she is in the final stage of pancreatic cancer that has spread to her liver. Her doctor wrote a letter to Red Cross officials saying her life expectancy may be 30 days or less.

Wagner called his mother at the Marshfield Clinic after getting a message about her cancer.
