The shooting at Fort Hood hits closer to home for one area family. We talked with the family in Stanley who has a son stationed at Fort Hood. Army Staff Sergeant Osvold's family says they talked to him throughout the day but not before his family watched the shooting unfold from their home in Stanley.
"He just came back from his third tour in Iraq with out a scratch, why now? You expect the worst," says Pat Osvold.
Pat Osvold says her husband heard the news on the radio when he was working in the garage.
"He says, Pat you better turn the TV on something is going on at Fort Hood," says Pat Osvold.
Their son is stationed at Fort Hood and he's only been back in the states for about a month. She says she tired calling her son but couldn't get a hold of him, but finally got through to his wife.
"When she answered she immediately said, mom I got to call you back. So of course that made me worry more," says Pat Osvold.
She says her daughter-in-law finally called her back to tell her that her son was alright.
He tells us the biggest question for him and many of his fellow soldiers is why.
"I have been in 19-and-a-half years, I've lost soldiers in deployments to Iraq. To know someone else died and you don’t know why and it’s here in the states, you want to know," says Staff Sergeant Art Osvold.
Staff Sergeant Art Osvold, who is a 1990 Cadott graduate, says he spent most of the day in lock down and says the shooting is troubling.
"This isn't something that should happen anywhere. This doesn't change my view of Killeen or of Fort Hood," says Staff Sergeant Osvold.
Pat says her heart goes out to the other families involved.
"God be with you, it has to be horrible," says Pat.
She says the uncertainty was the hardest part her. For Staff Sergeant Osvold, he says this is so hard because the loss of life happened here in the states at the hands of a fellow soldier.
