Across the country and around the state, many mourn the loss of life at fort hood through prayers and vigils this Sunday. Church members in Cadott, near where one soldier who is stationed at Fort Hood grew up, say the tragedy has shaken the whole nation.
Even though church members at Big Drywood Lutheran Church don't have any family or friends at Fort Hood, many have ties to the military, and say they know the pain families feel when soldiers are away.
"It's hard enough to have a family member in the military and worry about them and their safety when they're being deployed overseas in a war zone, let alone on an army base," says Pastor Diane House.
Here in Wisconsin, many people heading to church this Sunday morning say they're praying for the victims of the Fort Hood shooting.
“We'll not only be praying for the victims and their families, and those who were wounded and their families, but also the perpetrator of the violence because there's probably a whole story there and we don't really know why he did what he did," House.
Army officers say they're trying to be culturally sensitive in their investigation of suspect Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who is Muslim.
House says she feels it's not a time for retaliation, especially across faiths.
"I fear now there will be a violent backlash and that's never appropriate, so hopefully we can pray for peace and justice through all of that,” says House.
The three other Wisconsin soldiers who were wounded in the shootings are currently recovering.
Plans for future deployments for those soldiers remain unclear.
