In September, three western Wisconsin companies were charged with violating a federal wildlife law for illegally importing bait.
Now, two of those companies have pleaded guilty to the charges. The U.S. attorney's office says Friesses Minnow Farm in Cumberland and Hayward Bait and Tackle out of Hayward imported bait fish from outside the state without a permit.
Investigators say they violated the Lacy Act. It aims to keep diseased fish from crossing state lines.
If sentenced, the companies could pay up to $500,000 each and be on supervised release for three years.
