UPDATE:

The pilot of a small plane that made an emergency landing in the middle of a corn field last night says he's never been in a situation like that before.

We talked with the pilot, Alexander Samardzich Saturday and he says he's been flying plans for more than 30 years.

He says he had engine trouble and his training kicked in and he says that's how he ended in a corn field unharmed.

He doesn't know how much damage was done but says his insurance is taking a look.

ORIGINAL STORY::

Dunn County deputies tell WEAU 13 News that a small airplane made an emergency landing tonight in a corn field near Elk Mound.

Deputy Scott Pace says investigators with the Federal Aviation Administration are expected to arrive Saturday morning to figure out what happened.

Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith says the pilot, Alexander Samardzich from Bruce, was the only one on board. He was coming to Eau Claire from Florida and had engine trouble. Smith says he was not hurt. He says the plane is a 1984 single engine piper.

Charity Speich with the Chippewa Valley Regional Airport says air traffic controllers told her the plane was having a problem and decided to land. She says the plane was talking to controllers in Minneapolis, and not tower personnel in Eau Claire.
