In exactly one week gun hunters across Wisconsin will be hitting the hay and dreaming of that big buck. We talked to a couple people who don't hunt, but might love the season just as much as those hunters. That's because big bucks equal bigger bucks for local businesses.
"Deer hunting is our busiest time of the year," says Mike Maier.
Maier has owned Mike's Star Market in Eau Claire for 19 years. Every year he looks forward to and dreads the 16 hour days that come with November.
"Yes because it's really good for business and we all need that and no because of the long hours," Maier says.
"They are faithful people," says Audrey Passe with a laugh.
All 30 rooms at Passe's place are booked full for opening weekend like they have been for the 16 years she's owned the Mondovi Inn Motel.
"In fall usually I'm full and if somebody cancels it fills up fast," Passe says.
Making the deer hunt a season that's especially reassuring when times are tough.
"Hunting will stay a staple here forever," Passe says smiling. "Deer hunting is the best!"
Both Passe and Maier say money aside, they love working with the hunters and hearing about their yearly adventures.
The Wisconsin DNR says deer hunting in Wisconsin brings in somewhere around a billion dollars a year.
