First, the creation of a public intoxication ordinance in La Crosse. Now, the La Crosse common council is looking at new barriers to keep people from falling into the Mississippi River from Riverside Park.
>
The council approved the $30,000 barriers at a meeting Thursday night.
>
The vote comes almost three years to the day that a college student drowned in the river. Investigators believe another UW-La Crosse student, Lucas Homan, fell into the river from the same spot last fall and drowned. Both men had high blood alcohol levels.
>
The city's alcohol oversight committee says the initial idea for the barriers was to stop drunk people from falling, but say they will be a general safety measure as well.
