Wisconsin's Attorney General says sheriff's departments cannot charge suspects and job applicants for taking their fingerprints.
Fingerprinting is mandatory for some criminal suspects taken into custody. It can also be required for background checks in certain professions like health care and education.
Deputies in Grant County wanted to know whether they could start charging fees to put fingerprints on cards before they're submitted to the state for background checks.
J.B. Van Hollen responded Monday, saying state law does not give sheriffs the authority to charge fees for fingerprinting in any circumstance.
