La Crosse Mayor discusses possible volunteer fire department

The day after the City of La Crosse Mayor Matt Harter sprung the news that an all-volunteer fire department was being discussed as a way of cutting costs, people in the city are letting the news sink in.
Fire Chief Gregg Cleveland says the mayor has asked the fire department to do some research on whether it’s an option.
The research will compare the department to other fire departments throughout Wisconsin, like Eau Claire, Fond du Lac and Appleton.
The fire department costs $10 million to run--a number the mayor says is a little high, which is why studies are being done.
“Right now preliminary estimates show that an all-volunteer fire department is not feasible for the city of La Crosse, but we’ll continue to do our research and do our comparable studies report,” Harter said.
95 paid firefighters serve the La Crosse Fire Department for a city that has about 51,000 people living there.
