The Witmer Sisters Make Their Decision

The Witmer sisters say it was the toughest decision they've ever made.

The two soldiers decided against returning to combat in Iraq after their sister was killed in a Baghdad ambush earlier this month. Instead, Rachel and Charity Witmer of New Berlin will seek a non-combat assignment.

They say they were urged by their commanders in Iraq and others to request a reassignment following their sister Michelle's death. They say they were swayed by Major General Al Wilkening's fear the attention they have received since Michelle's death would put their fellow soldiers at risk if they rejoined their units.

Instead, the Wisconsin National Guard is looking for suitable assignments for the sisters so they can fulfill their active duty.
