Firewood Recall

If you bought firewood from Menards lately, you may need to start a fire soon.

There's a firewood recall but they want you to burn the firewood instead of bringing it back.
Taylor’s Wood Products is recalling firewood sent to stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota because it may be infested with Emerald Ash Borers that have killed millions of trees in other parts of the country.

Thousands of bundles of the firewood from Taylor’s came from quarantined trees in Illinois. If you have it, you're supposed to burn it right away before the bugs hatch.

Statement from Menards

When the federal quarantine went into effect on Dec. 1st, Menards followed orders from the USDA to immediately halt receipt of any shipments of hardwood firewood from Taylors Wood Products. The USDA inspected the firewood and required a certification sticker on all future shipments of hardwood firewood from Taylors Wood Products.
Following the quarantine, Menards voluntarily halted all future hipments of firewood from Taylors Wood Products until written verification was obtained from Taylors verifying their compliance with the USDA standards allowing the firewood to be shipped across state lines.

On Jan. 18th, Taylors received certification that they had met the conditions needed to label their wood as “USDA Certified”. Upon written confirmation of this certification, Menards resumed shipment of this certified product into its stores. A USDA inspection on April 17th found that Taylors was no longer in compliance with the USDA quarantine requirements. Following the USDA's instructions, Menards
immediately removed this product from its shelves and shipped all certified firewood back to its Distribution Center as requested by the USDA.

On April 25th, again following the USDA's instructions, Menards shipped all nonquarantined Taylor firewood back to its Distribution Center. Menards is currently awaiting instructions from the USDA about what it should do with the firewood inventoryin its Distribution Center. The small bundles of Taylors firewood were stocked mainly for campfire wood; therefore, Menards sold very few of the Taylors firewood bundles and is in the process of securing another vendor whose products meet all regulatory requirements to handle the firewood demand for the upcoming camping season.

Menards relies on its vendors to provide high quality goods for Menards’ guests and is dedicated to promptly remedying this situation and complying with all regulatory agency requirements. Menards urges guests to comply with the burning instruction issued by the USDA. Guests are also welcome to a full refund of any Taylors Wood Product Firewood purchased at Menards and covered by the recall. To do so, guests should stop by the returns counter by May 15th with their receipt showing purchase of the Taylors firewood.

NewsCenter 13 got the following statement from Home Depot:

The Home Depot does not sell the Taylor's wood product mentioned on your newscast 4/26/07. In addition, the company does not allow the interstate transfer of any firewood product and does not source wood products from areas in an identified quarantine zone.
