More than 100 Great Blue Herons have been found dead near Hayward. Anglers fishing in the Chippewa Flowage discovered the injured birds late last week.
They contacted Wisconsin Authorities after they noticed several herons with broken legs and wings along the shoreline of Banana Island.
According to the DNR, it was nature that did the damage. A hail storm that occurred two Sundays ago, reports say some hail was golf ball size.
The herons were nesting in trees that had no branches to protect them, so they were hit by the hail. Eleven birds were found alive and are currently being cared for at a rehabilitation center.
