A new state-wide requirement for school buses has gone into effect as of this Monday, intending to cut back on kids being in the danger zones around the front of the school bus.
A crossing gate is now required, which forces kids to walk at least 70 inches from the front of the bus.
The Student Transit buses used by the Eau Claire School District have either been purchased with the gate of have been retro-fitted to add the new safety measure.
Jim Fey, a supervisor for the company says students seem to be compliant with the new regulation.
"I haven't heard any reports from the drivers of kids jumping over the top of them or anything like that," says Fey. "They see it, it's a reminder, hey, I have to walk out around."
The company spent between $25,000 and $30,000 for the crossing gates.
